Manteo Mitchell is one of America’s premier 400m sprinters.

He will forever be remembered and revered as one of the most heroic efforts ever in the history of the Olympics.

In today’s qualifying round of the 4 X 400 relay Mitchell was the leadoff man.

I love this race as it’s all about guts and not much strategy as a typical 400m sprint is.

As Mitchell came off the last curve he was waaaaay behind the leaders.

As probably with everyone else watching, they thought as I did, this is just not what we expect from the U.S 4 x 400m team. After all the U.S.A. hasn’t lost a 4 x 400 relay since 1952 against Jamaica.

Well folks as it turned out something drastic happened at the 200m mark. Mitchell felt something pop. As he described it, “It felt like somebody literally just snapped my leg in half,"

He ran the last 200 meters with a broken left fibula!!!!!!

He completed the first leg in 46.1 seconds. For those of you who know the 400m race, over 90% of 400m runners would love to have that time with 2 good legs.

The United States tied the Bahamas in their qualifying round in 2 minutes, 58.87 seconds. Even more stunning is this is the fastest time ever run in the first round of the relay at the Olympics!!

I tip my hat and bow to this team!
